Marketing is a small field, chances are people know a lot of other people and if your references are coming from people who are not known in marketing, that is a worse signal than it would be in a thicker market like economics.
Plus you will be a 4th year AP and even with 2 that is not a good record. Marketing is also a much more caty field. Some strong peole on the behavorial side are awful and envious. On the quant side, shades of assholes because they think they are better. This is not an easy field to get into.

In exchange for federal funding to reduce public college and university tuition to zero, he said, at least 75 percent of college courses would have to be taught by tenured or tenure-track professors. Currently, that proportion is less than 40 percent and dropping.
How this happened is a story of a rupture in the way the academy produces and consumes people with scholarly credentials. Inroughlypeople were employed teaching college. Of those, abouthad tenure or were on track to get it.
They enjoyed professional status, strong job security, relatively good pay on averageand the freedom to speak their minds. The rest were so-called contingent or adjunct faculty: some employed full time, others filling in a course or two per semester.
Why earning a PhD is an advantage in today’s industry job market
They had lower pay, less status and tenuous job security, particularly if they spoke their minds. There were also thousands of graduate students, not counted in the numbers above, teaching as part of their training. The University of California, Santa Cruz, which is known to be progressive even by the standards of academia, recently fired 54 graduate assistants who were striking for higher pay.
The percentage of professors on the tenure track had been slowly declining since the s. In the late s came a demographic event that would ultimately throw the university labor market into a tailspin: the first college years of the so-called millennials, those born from the early s to the mids. Colleges swelled with students over the next decade and a half, with undergraduate enrollment increasing from Colleges needed to hire hundreds of thousands of additional professors.
Administrators had options. They could have kept the ratio of tenured to nontenured about the same, using new tuition revenue to create more tenure-track positions.
Instead, the number of contingent faculty more than doubled, to 1. The number of tenured and tenure-track faculty, by contrast, increased by only 9. It is not the case, as is sometimes said or implied, that there are fewer tenured college professors now than there used to be. In absolute terms, there are more.

But 94 percent of the net increase in college professors hired to teach the millennial generation were contingent, meaning off the tenure track. For colleges, this was cheaper.
The halls of academe are known to be hospitable to people with radical views on power relationships between capital and labor, but colleges themselves are often merciless actors in the labor market.
Many adjuncts earn only a few thousand dollars per course, with no health insurance or retirement benefits.
Twenty-five percent of part-time faculty receive some form of public assistance. Because doctorates can take eight years or longer to complete, many millennials were still in graduate school when the higher education industry took a turn for the worse after the Great Recession. The economic downturn hammered state budgets, resulting in major cuts to public university funding that persisted well into the s. At the same time, the millennial demographic wave crested. Undergraduate enrollment dropped by 1.
Universities needed fewer professors, and they had less money to pay them. The timing of the recession surprised many experts. But universities knew that the business cycle still existed. In science and technology fields, and some of the social sciences, many doctoral students aspire to corporate or government jobs, and many get those jobs, yet these disciplines also are seeing fewer people earn Ph.
Postdocs are much more common in the physical and life sciences than in the humanities and social sciences, although they are becoming more common in those fields as well. But a key difference among disciplines explains much of the urgency about this issue in the humanities and social sciences.
Not only do humanities and some social sciences graduate students take longer to earn their doctorates than those in many STEM fields, but they are graduating with much more debt -- much of it from their time as doctoral students.
This makes the need to find employment with adequate compensation more urgent than for those graduating without such large debt levels. This year's data are being released at a time when many minority student protests have focused attention on the relative lack of racial and ethnic diversity at many colleges and universities. In trying to resolve some of those protests, many colleges have pledged to meet certain targets for hiring black and Latino faculty members by set dates -- even as some have warned that the supply of black and Latino Ph.
The NSF also boasted about gains for racial and ethnic minority groups, but they were generally over the long run. The proportion of doctorates awarded to African-Americans has increased from 4.
And over the same period, the rate for Hispanics or Latinos increased from 3. But year to year, the numbers are relatively stagnant, and they do not reflect the overall growth in the Ph. The number of Latino Ph. The number of black Ph. A disproportionate number of Ph.
Those breakdowns may be crucial, as many colleges have said they want not only to increase the numbers of black and Latino faculty members, but to do so across disciplines.Industry employers value candidates with PhDs because they are expert innovators. Indeed, part of the requirement for getting a PhD is mastering a field of study and then advancing that field through new, peer-reviewed discoveries. Today, I consult with Fortune companies and manage three biotechnology start-ups. My ability to learn quickly, deal with repeated failure and rapidly solve complex problems is a result of all the time I spent testing, repeating and tweaking experiments during graduate school.
Misconceptions are powerful if you believe them. The key to avoiding a limiting belief is to think and act like the PhD graduate you are. With a PhD, you should not trust a sample size of three. I had a big goofy smile on my face to hide how uncomfortable I was. Someone else started talking and I relaxed a little. One was doing a postdoc, one had just received her PhD, and the other was working as a temporary research staffer for some biotech company.
We were all at a PhDs In Business networking event. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. But just underneath all the chatter and fake smiling was a sense of desperation. After I left the networking event, I put the all the business cards that people handed me into one of my desk drawers with plans to email a few of them the next day. Maybe that was the problem. I spent months and months going to networking events and sending out resumes online.
I thought I was doing everything I could. I was working hard. I was connecting with people.
I was giving it my all. I was just doing what everyone else was doing. It was only when I decided to do things differently that I got my first interview. My first interview was a nightmare. They started asking me basic questions and I answered like a robot.
Then I waited for them to ask more questions. Why were they waiting for me to talk? Somehow I made it through the interview and got a call a week later with a very bad offer.
The salary was almost twice as low as I was expecting.
